As you likely know, October is breast cancer awareness month — and the month end is quickly approaching. However, just because the month is coming to a close doesn’t mean our awareness should! Here are the reasons we wear pink each October, and all year long:
Why We Need More Awareness
Awareness is very important when it comes to any and every type of cancer. Did you know that 1 in every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime? The more that we can do to lower that percentage, the better!
Understand: we don’t raise awareness because no one knows about breast cancer, what it does, or what can happen as result of the disease. We raise awareness, rather, to push women (and even men) to get checked annually for breast cancer; we raise awareness to make sure more and more people know the facts; we raise awareness to make sure more women know the warning signs and symptoms of breast cancer; and we raise awareness to save lives.
Mammograms Save Lives
The truth is, being aware of one’s body and the changes taking place within it is an important way to be cautious. Women should frequently perform self-checks, and should go to the doctor if they notice any changes in their breasts.
However, self-checks are not the only important practice when it comes to detection: we also highly suggest going in for mammograms each and every year. The reason? The earlier this cancer is detected, the less likely it is to cause harm to a woman’s body — even yours!
Key Breast Cancer Facts
There are important facts to know when learning about breast cancer prevention and awareness. According to San Diego State University (SDSU):
- In 2014, an estimated 232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in U.S. women. In addition to invasive breast cancer, an estimated 62,570 cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed.
- The risk of breast cancer increases with age
- Sadly, in 2014, an estimated 40,000 U.S. women will lose their battle to breast cancer.
- However difficult this number is to see, that number also spells out hope. At this time, there are an estimated 2.8 million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S.
What Can We Do?
So, ladies, what are some of the ways you can prevent breast cancer? Exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting your alcohol consumption to no more than one glass per day are large factors in prevention! Not to mention, diet can make a great difference, as well!

Go Ahead: Get Out There
So, where can you wear your breast cancer awareness robes? Just because most people wear robes indoors doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t make a fashion statement while raising awareness in your robe! You’d be surprised of the many uses you will find for your new, beautiful robe!
Wear your robe to one of the many awareness walks or running marathons hosted by nonprofits. People love wearing quirky, fun, pink themed outfits to these events. Although it’s a tough subject, marathon participants often choose to have a little fun while doing something selfless and important, in celebration of the lives they are saving!
Host a Pink Event
Host a formal banquet or gala and give away our exquisite, high quality robes as door prizes. It’s a fun way to raise awareness and money for breast cancer foundations. Or, throw a Breast Cancer Pajama Party. Hosting a party is a great way to raise funds while raising the fun! Trust us, everyone loves a good theme party to celebrate — just make sure they bring their pink robes!
Thinking smaller scale? Go ahead: have a good old-fashioned slumber party and movie night with the girls! Invest in cute, pink decorations, bake pink-hued sweets, and don your favorite pink robe! Invite all of your friends for a girl’s night in just like bad in high school! While you are at it, think of ways that each of you can help the cause: through donations, planning an event, creating a bake sale, or volunteering!
Give the Gift of Pink
Gift a pink robe to a loved one that is or has fought the battle with breast cancer. Show her you support her, love her, and care by embroidering her name and a pink ribbon onto a perfectly pink robe! It will serve as a subtle reminder of both, her triumph over the disease and the respect you have for her in facing her painful struggle. Raising awareness and giving gifts has never been so meaningful.
