Improving the Patient’s Experience with Courtney Boehmer, RN

This month we spoke with Courtney Boehmer, RN, MSN-CNL, C-EFM, at Family Birthplace, SSM Health St. Joseph-Lake St. Louis. After more than a decade as a Labor & Delivery nurse, Courtney was promoted to manager of a Family Birthplace unit for a busy community hospital. Learn how upgrading from standard hospital gowns to Medi-Robes has positively impacted the patient experience.

BT: Tell us a little bit about yourself, your background, and how you ended up in the medical field.
CB: I have been a Labor & Delivery nurse for 14 years. Just over three years ago I accepted the manager role of a Family Birthplace unit at a booming community hospital. Supporting patients during their birth and being a part of their story is such a privilege. Now, as a leader, I get to support nurses and ensure we have the knowledge, skill, and resources to give our patients the delivery experience they desire.

BT: What is your role at the hospital?
CB: I am the Clinical Nurse Manager for the Family Birthplace Unit.

BT: Is your Healthcare facility active in looking for solutions to improve the Patient’s Experience?
CB: Patient experience is always a priority at our healthcare ministry.  We are continuously looking for ways to create the best experience for our patients. Caring for patients, on a day they’ll never forget, comes with expectations. Our unit strives to ensure the patient’s experience matches or exceeds their birth expectations.

BT: Has the Medi-Robe features made a difference, and if so, in what ways? How has the
Medi-Robe helped at the birth center?
CB: Upon hearing about the Medi-Robes, our team thought it would be a great gift for our patients thus adding to our overall patient experience. The robes are super soft and comfortable, they offer more coverage than just a hospital gown and they have snaps on the sleeves. The snaps offer convenience for breastfeeding moms and allow nursing staff to easily manage IV lines. The robes have been a great addition in helping to exceed patient expectations.

BT: What type of bathrobe or gown were you giving your Patients before switching to the Medi-Robe?
CB: Previously, our unit did not offer a specific robe for patients, just hospital gowns.
